Theoretical Knots

It all started with a friendship bracelet.

This project started at camp as a lesson in pattern design. One of the hottest activities shared by most, campers and counselors alike, is the friendship bracelet trade. The idea was simple: layout a grid, sketch a design, color in said design, and start knotting. I was shocked with how quickly even the youngest campers started developing uniquely complex bracelets. However, I loved the work being generated during the design project. When the summer ended, I excitedly returned to my studio practice. I wanted to play with this idea of a painted bracelet. This quickly became a practice in color theory. After completing the physical version of each work I photographed them and began to digitally manipulate them.
