Space Scapes

A painting series of landscapes from worlds beyond our own.

This project is an exercise in utilizing plain air painting techniques to depict scenes from places I’ve only seen in dreams. Each work begins with an intuitive painting process. Layers of diluted acrylic paint washes begin to reveal the bases for a landscape.

The Rockies

Capturing the feeling of a beautiful day on a rocky planet. The suns ignite the fast moving clouds. Warm shades of orange, pinks, and yellows predicting potential precipitation. Sea stacks rise from the frigid water and howl with in the wind. In the distance, purple mountains hold up the sky and the orbiting moons.

The Pines

A foggy clear night on a deep, swift moving river. Fog seems to separate the river bank trees from the low and distant mountain range. Light from the moon seems to slice the river in two. The air is crisp, but the glow from a low hanging fire planet in the sky brings the illusion of warmth.

Neon Springs

Glowing water flows between the egg-like springs, its current laps the naturally formed rock crevasses surrounding the yellow spring goo. Land forms covered in neon moss rise from the water. Trunk-like growths shoot up from these formations releasing a glowing fog. The clear night sky reveals distant planets like they are close enough to grab from the stars.
